It is some years since Cuckoos could be regularly heard calling around the town in April and May. Chris Boll heard one in Lacey Green on the 20th May and another a week earlier and I know that one was calling in Naphill and another around Prestwood earlier this month. But I have yet to hear one in or around Princes Risborough this year following only two occasions last year!
It is still not clear why they have declined so dramatically as their host birds still thrive. Changes in their winter habitat in Africa or perhaps the earlier breeding pattern of host birds in the UK are possible factors but, whatever, they are clearly struggling to adjust.
Have you heard Cuckoos locally? Please let me know and do send in wildlife reports that we can share with others.
