Scything Swifts and old Hushwing

It is said that the arrival of Swifts heralds summer proper. Well they arrived in Princes Risborough last Thursday, screaming above the weekly market as they signalled their arrival. They nest in older buildings around the town centre and are a stirring sight on summer evenings as they patrol the skies alongside our House Martins and Swallows.

Old Hushwing is a local name for the Barn Owl. Helen and I enjoyed a great view of this magical bird hunting in meadows next to our allotment at Meadle on Monday evening. Their rapid wing beats, occasional glides and sudden 180 degree turns are quite special and this owl looked majestic in the evening light.
